TYPES OF TEXT THAT SOUNDS FOREIGN TO MOST PEOPLE

1. Anecdote : A kind of text to tell an amusing or unusual incident. Sometime humorous, but not a joke. Usually contain satire.

Generic Structure

  • Abstract : retelling the story.

  • Orientation : introduction to the scene.

  • Crisis : contains the unusual or amusing scene.

  • Reaction : the response to the crisis.

  • Coda : the evaluation or resolution to the amusing event.

Dominant Language

  • Temporal conjunction

  • Material process

  • Exclamations

  • To entertain or bring cheer the reader.

2. Spoof : A kind of comedic/funny text that usually end with a twist.

Generic Structure

  • Orientation : the opening of the story.

  • Event : contains all the event in the story.

  • Twist : contains unpredicted funny twist in the end of the story.

Dominant Language

  • Adverb

  • Past tense

  • Action adverb

  • Arranged by chronologically

  • To entertain the reader.

3. News Item : A kind of text that inform reader with newest or current event that considered newsworthy.

Generic Structure

  • Newsworthy event : the main event that will be reported.

  • Background : contains the backstory of the event like place, people, date and time.

  • Sources : The source of the report like eyewitness or experts.

Dominant Language

  • Action verb

  • Adverbs : time, place

  • Saying verb

  • Short information about the story in headline

Purpose

  • To inform about an event.

  • To present information about current event.

4. Hortatory Exposition : A kind of argumentation text that has persuasion in the end.

Generic Structure

  • Thesis : contains the idea that will be discussed.

  • Argument : contains arguments that supported the thesis.

  • Recommendation : contains

  • Simple present tense

  • Adverb

  • Modals

  • Action verb

  • Adjective

  • Technical terms

  • General noun

  • Abstract noun

  • Connectiveness

  • To persuade someone about what sould or/and shouldn’t be done.

5. Discussion : A kind of text that present information and opinion about an issues.

Generic Structures

  • Issues : Contain the topic or issue that will be discussed.

  • Argument : both pros and cons about the issue.

  • Conclusion : based on both pros and cons argument.

  • Simple present tense

  • Thinking verb

  • Adverb of manner

  • Modality

  • Conjunction

  • General noun

  • Abstract noun

Purpose

  • To present two point of view about an issue.

  • To present argument from two different view.

6. Review : A kind of text that criticize or evaluate an product or work for public audience

Generic Structure

  • Orientation : background information of the product.

  • Interpretative recount : summary of the story or the history of the product.

  • Evaluation : Evaluation, and opinion about the product.

  • Evaluative metaphor : critique and compliment of the product.

Dominant Language

  • Adjective

  • Metaphor

  • Long and complex causes

  • To criticize or evaluate a product or work.
